Humanity banding together to beat back an alien invasion is a typical sci-fi plot, but Arrival flips that archetype on its head. When extraterrestrial visitors arrive in twelve locations on Earth, Dr. Louise Banks has to explore the way humanity views existence to unravel the mystery of why the aliens have come. Arrival explores "first contact" not as examining the aliens, but ourselves, through time, language, love and loss - even when it hasn't even happened yet. Arrival stands out as possibly the best alien sci-fi movie and is an exciting examination of self.
